2010 Alpa Senior Open, Buxtehude/Germany
Men : 2nd Dan Ahlquist (SWE), 3 rd Chris Vandamme (BEL), 4th Kalle Gaiser (GER)
Day 5 and Finals
The 3rd stop of the International Senior Bowling Tour (ISBT) showed again that the format with separated Women and Men divisions together with separated finals and price money is not only the vision of the ISBT Presidium but moreover very much appreciated by the ladies as they have their ‘own’ competition. Also the ranking is a separated competition between men and women.
Due to the ESBC Championships in Vienna, only one week ahead of the ALPA Senior Open apparently some well-known players could not make it to Buxtehude. Nevertheless the tournament welcomed a good mix of players from Germany, Norway, Sweden, Holland, Belgium, Ireland and Austria.
Despite the extreme heat at, especially, the Friday and Saturday squads these were the highest scoring sessions of the week with Dan Ahlquist (SWE) leading by two breathtaking 6-game series of 1537 and 1472 total 3009 pins an qualifying average of ample 250,75! As from Day 1 Farida Pascoal-Blom (NLD) took the lead and stayed there until the finals on Sunday.
The Sunday-finals were of very high quality whereas the winners in both divisions were decided in the last game and even in the last frame with the men.
You could feel the intensity at both the top four (4) ladies and the top ten (10) men. Due to the advanced scoring processing system of the ISBT the players and the audience were kept informed on a game by game basis, this feature was very well appreciated by all bowlers, ladies and men and the audience.
The processing was carried out by Torbe Gaiser with Ad vd. Jagt in the background monitoring the processing.
This way the audience could follow their favorite(s) easily which was much appreciated.
As it was very tensive with the men’s division the outcome was very surprising in the end. Winner of the men’s division Ron Oldfield (GBR) and runner-up Dan Ahlquist (SWE) were eventually separated by just three (3) pins!
At the ladies division leading lady Erna Buysse (BEL) after 3-games of final play lost track in the last and final game whereas Farida Pascoal-Blom (NLD) took her change and clinched first place with a strong finish in frames 9 and 10.
Iggi Zech (GER) took her change as well and finished on a well deserved 2nd place.
Day 4
Men
The last three (3) qualification squads were, among others, used by players to make sure they made the qualification cut. Others used them for ‘practice’ like Dan Ahlquist (SWE) no need to bowl again as he was already placed first and nevertheless shot a 1472 adding his total even higher 3009 pins ample 250 average!
Asking why he bowled again in this temperature ‘I just like to play, I love the game of bowling’ he said.
Due to late arrival of Chris Vandamme (BEL) he could only bowl in the last available squads (8-9-10) on Saturday.
Notwithstanding the inside heat (40 deg.) he managed to bowl two solid 6-game series of 1460 and 1426 totalling 2886 pins averaging 240,5.
Despite that Chris is a well known and classy player this still is a world class performance earning admiration of the players in his squad and the remaining qualifiers. Chris took over 2nd place from Barry Horne (USA).
Ladies
In the ladies division fine scoring lefty Barbara Karnasch (GER) pulled the attention on Saturday morning by scoring two 6-game series of 1223 and 1239 total 2462 just 10-pins short of #1 Farida Pascoal-Blom.
The qualification cut for the ladies was 2214 pins and with the men 2569 pins.
Plus two (2) ladies desperados Andrea Wisse (BEL) and Else Skovgaard (DEN), the Male desperados qualifiers were Christian Stefan (AUT), Arthur Dähn (GER), Kalle Gaiser (GER) and John Skovgaard (DEN)

Day 3
All insiders thought that the total score (2x6gms) of 2833 by Barry Horne (USA) could not be beaten.
But Dan Ahlquist (SWE) thought differently and found a shot on the left hand side what looked like a Swedish tornado.
Not withstanding the heat inside the bowling which reached temperatures of over 35 deg. C. Dan was zeroed in and shot his first set of 6-games in de 1st squad of 1404 and shot his 2nd set of 6-games total of 1537 (!) totaling 2941 averaging 242,5 over his 12-games set.
Guy Latry (BEL) followed with a 12-game total 2709 and Bill Goldwasser (BEL) shortly behind Guy Latry with 2669.
