September 4, 2010
The tournament at a glance until Saturday evening.

It’s always difficult to conduct a tournament for the very first time, especially in a country like France where already are a lot of senior tournaments. According the tournament organizer, however, this should be the right date to conduct the Senior French Open.

Apparently nobody within the organization team realized that during the tournament a convention was going on which attracts a lot of people limiting the amount of hotel rooms to zero in the direct vicinity of the Planet Bowl in Lomme. On top of that Europe’s largest fair was held from Friday till Sunday attracting over a million (1.000.000!) people in Lille, limiting the availability of hotel accommodation even more. Nevertheless the tournament organization decided to conduct the tournament next again but on a different date.

The 80 bowlers strong players field started on Wednesday en finished qualification on Saturday evening with a one game Desperado which eventually was won by Frederick Lagrou (B) and Luigi Leone (F). On the not too easy lane conditions, most players encountered problems, apparently Yves van Damme (B), Dominique de Nolf (B) and Pierre Ravez (B) seems not to have too much problems averaging 210 over. Chris Vandamme (B) showed again that he is top shape and topped the other Belgians scoring 2764 pins (230.3 avrg) taking 1st place by a mere 200 pins ahead of #2.

With the ladies Farida Pascoal-Blom (NL), Liliane Vintens (B), Angie Brown (GB) and Janet Hodge (GB) seems to have the right answer on the tough lane condition. Liliane Vintens scored a 1277 series making a lot of men jealous establishing a total score of 2328 for 2nd place topped by Farida Pascoal-Blom (2352) for 1st place. Followed by Angie Brown for 3rd spot and Janet Hodge for 4th place.

Sunday finals will start at 08:30 hrs for the men the top 16 ladies will join the boys at 12:30 hrs for the semi-finals.

Qualification to Finals

August 15 Sunday Finals

40-men qualified for the 4-game ¼-finals carrying forward the pins from the 8-game qualifying round. Top-gun and local favorite André Geelen added 995(!) pins to his previous total of 2004 to stay on top, followed by Ron Oldfield/ENG by only 2-pins new face in Brussels Lol Ellis/ENG followed with a strong 4th game (277) finish for 3rd spot. Chris Vandamme/BEL got the hands together by shooting a perfect game in the 4th and last ¼ final game to occupy 4th place.

The semi finals for men and women brought some real fireworks especially with the men’s division. Dieter Pletch/GER made a huge step by his 4-game semi final 247-245-278-246 total 1016 (254.0 avrg) to occupy the 8th and last spot for the Round Robin. André Geelen/BEL added another 970 pins to his total staying ahead of the competition by 11-pins occupying 1st place to go into the Round Robin final. Ron Oldfield/ENG followed with a ‘modest’ 941 pins, Chris Vandamme/BEL 973 pins and Lol Ellis/ENG 904 pins occupying 2nd, 3rd and 4th place respectively. Despite a 4-game 975 including a 288 game Dominique de Nolf, local Bowlmaster Proshop Operator, closed on 5th spot at distance from the top 4 by ample 100-pins.

The 16-ladies semi finalists had 4-games to decide who will advance to the top 8 for the 7-game Round Robin. Angie Brown/ENG showed that she wants another Belgian title, as she won the Flanders Senior Open/Latem-B, only 3-weeks ago by a massive 932 pins including a 279 game occupying 1st spot just 27 pins ahead of Liliane Vintens/BEL looking for her 2nd consecutive win as she won the Schiedam Senior Open just two weeks ago. The real battle was going on for places 7-8-9 only separated by 14-pins it all went down to the last (4) game. Uschi Diekhof/GER shooting 630 over her first three semi final games shot a disappointing last game of 137(!) leaving her empty handed and occupying the most not wanted 9th spot.

The men’s Round Robin was one of a very high quality with games of 260-270 and 280 where not unusual but more regularity! André Geelen/BEL and Ron Oldfield/ENG changed position almost every game of the 7-game Round Robin. Going into the last game it was not decided who actually was going to win. The only remaining lefty and local bowler André Geelen shot a beautiful 288-game, Ron Oldfield had not finished his game but the fans of André were already celebrating his tournament victory as Ron Oldfield lost his game but as he shot a last game of 247 plus his age-bonus Ron received an extra bonus because of a 250-over game! Ron’s personal accountants calculated his total to be four (4) pins more than André Geelen’s total, 3910 – 3906 respectively. 3rd place for newby Lol Ellis/ENG at a modest 100-pins distance to 2nd place and 100-pins ahead of Chris Vandamme, 4th place.

The ladies Round Robin was actually a one woman show by Liliane Vintens/BEL, Liliane started off with a 2-game total of 498 and wins for both games which gave her foundation for the remaining 5-games. Angie Brown/ENG could not gain momentum to endanger Liliane although scoring games of 249 and 244. The two last games Liliane shot another 461-pins securing her 1st place. Angie Brown had to settle for 2nd place and Marianne Pelz/GER took 3rd place at distance.

With 106 participants the organization was satisfied but emphasized that more participants are welcome next year August 18-21, 2011.

Hope to see you all in Lomme, France for the next tour stop #7 at the 2010 French Senior Open, September 1-5 2010.

Three days of bowling at a glance.

Looking at the Lane Pattern provided by Dominique Colignon and Jean Jacque his mechanic the pattern looks ‘easy’ but in fact it was not, although pretty high scores were accomplished by a variety of bowlers, men and women.

As usual the pattern was announced on both the Bowlmaster and the ISBT site for players reference.

The earlier squads (Wednesday/Thursday) brought forward some very promising scores by Chris Vandamme/Bel 1929 to take first place. Than Local favorite André Geelen and Runner-Up of the Flanders Senior Open/Latem took over the lead by 2004 pins. On Friday afternoon the British delegation entered the bowl and immediately Jack Smith/GB started off with a three game 747 totaling 1922 over his 8-game qualifying.

The Saturday squads were filled with re-entries but also first qualifiers like Barry Horne/USA 1707, Keith Hodge/GB 1807. In the last Saturday afternoon squad local Bowlmaster player and ProShop Operator got the hands together by shooting a perfect game in his 7th game, making his total 1887 with nothing but 200-games. But Lol Ellis/GB learned from his 1st ‘practice’ session and used his re-entry ultimately by accomplishing a massive 1952 pins including his age bonus of 40 totaling 1992 pins, just 12 pins short to #1 André Geelen/B.

Meanwhile Ron Oldfield/GB used his re-entry to better his 1st qualifying 8-games by scoring 1984 pins incl. age-bonus occupying 3rd place.

Top 40 will advance to the qtr final, cut for #40 is Steve Wright/GB 1681pins. Then cut to 16. #16 is Mick Inch/GB 1810 pins.

With the ladies Liliane Vintens/B, winner of the Schiedam Senior Open two weeks ago, used her re-entry to take the lead with 1721 pins over Erna Buysse/B 1662 pins. Angie Brown and Farida Pascoal-Blom/NL battled for a high ranking position which eventually was ‘won’ by Farida scoring 1682 over her 8-game qualifying.

After qualification the ranking was, #1 Liliane Vintens, #2 Farida Pascoal-Blom and #3 Erna Buysse. Top 16 with the ladies qualify for the semi final and cut to 8 for the Round Robin finals.

Day 5 – Finals

Sunday August 1st was the day of nothing but final play.

The men started off their 4-game final from scratch .

It was clear to the bowlers as well the spectators that big numbers would be necessary to make the top 20. No less than 17 (seventeen) 900-series(!) and 3 high 800-series were to be accomplished to make the top-20.

Dan Ahlquist/SW took 1st place with 978 and Guy Latry/Fr settled for #20 with 879.

Meanwhile the ladies joined the men for their ½-final a strong 4-game 858 payed off for 1st place going in the Round Robin for Angie Brown/GB.

Gisela Insinger/DE closed for 8th spot to make the Round Robin.

After the dust clouds settled with the men Ron Oldfield/GB took 1st place with 1966, averaging 245.

Barry Horne/USA just took 8th spot in the Round Robin with 1858-pins (avrg. 232) just ahead of Christer Danielsson/SW who had to settle for 9th place.

A Round Robin final is always exiting as you cannot afford a bad game, therefore, most of this kind of finals are decided in the last game.

Just like previous years this was happening again in this edition of the SSO.

In the ladies division Liliane Vintens/BE took 1st place by a win over Yvonne Berndt/SW, Angie Brown/GB battling for 2nd place against Jan Hodge/GB lost her game and had to settle for 3rd place. Jan Hodge took 2nd place.

In the men’s division everything was settled in the very last frames of the last RR-game.

Chris Vandamme/BE in the lead after 6-games met Frank Lindsay/GB, Chris lost his game with a very low score. Meanwhile Ron Oldfield/GB and Dan Ahlquist/SW battled their way to the top, although Dan lost his game with a high score (244) it turned out to be enough to settle for second place. Ron, by his win over Dan took 1st place.

Final standings:

Ladies:

Men:

With 200 entries and 2x Perfect Games (1x Left Hand/1x Right Hand) we can look back to a very good result of our 5th anniversary of the 2010 Schiedam Senior Open. With Ad vd Jagt as our Tournament Director and his Tournament backing him up this edition of the SSO was one of the best conducted or even the best ever, only the bowlers and spectators can judge that.

Day 4

Saturday July 31st squad H started at 08:30 hrs, despite the early hour it attracted 38 (9x female and 29 male) bowlers.

Although there were quite some re-entries we could welcome also some new faces, among the ladies was Cathy Roux/Fr ,organizer of the La Rochelle Senior Open in 2011, she immediately showed her intentions and claimed a spot in the finals by winning her squad with 1596 pins.

Meanwhile Ulf Lönngren/Sw ‘practised’ and shot an incredible 2069 including a 280-game and even improved his first score of 1922 taking 1st place with the men. Apart from Ulf Lönngren’s 2000 score we welcomed 1x 1900 (Hermann Wimmer/De), 5x 1800’s and 7x 1700 series were established.

The last possibility to qualify (Squad K) on Saturday attracted 48 bowlers, a full house, Jan Hodge/UK took advantage of her entry and shot a very decent 1755 occupying the first place with the ladies.

Angie Brown/UK used her re-entry for a practice session and settled with 1650, 34 pins less than her first entry.

Dan Ahlquist/SW used his re-entry to improve his first entry and shot 2042 including games of 289/279 and 268 to settle for 2nd place. Several other male bowlers would like to ‘buy’ his left arm but incomprehensible he refused!

André Geelen/BE with a ‘modest’ 1946 enough for a 5th place for the total ranking.

Jan Hodge and Dan Ahlquist took the Sluijmer Consultancy day-price.

Meanwhile it was calculating time, Steve Wright/UK 1759 was the cut (#36) with the men, Kirsten Lund/DK settled the cut at 1533 (#10) with the ladies.

Turbo ladies Claribel Muis/NL and Gisela Insinger/DE were added to the 10 lady finalists, with the men 4 were added to the 40-men finalists. Jacky Perignon/BE, Mick Inch/UK, John R. Wilson/IR and Torbjörn Halling/SW.

After some presentations ao. Balls from Rotogrip/Storm it was time to join and enjoy the famous Schiedam Senior Open buffet.

The Sunday-morning finals will start at 08:30 am.

Day 3

Friday July 30 was the longest day of the tournament, starting at 09:00 the day finished at 23:30 hrs with the last ball of the day.

In between a lot happened in the men’s division in the early morning squad. John Skovgaard/DK settled for a 1739 which will be not likely enough to make the finals. Dieter Pletsch/DE shot 1805 with a last game of 279 but Jürgen Preuss/DE topped all of them with a solid 1892. In the ladies section nothing spectacular happened except that Else Skovgaard/DK won the day price sponsored by Sluijmer Consultancy, Schiedam/NL

The afternoon squad showed some more fireworks, Yvonne Berndt/SW used her re-entry to better her first series and settled for 1676 taking over the lead from Farida Pascoal-Blom/NL, Cathy Roux/Fr followed with 1624, winning the Sluijmer day price as Yvonne won that in a previous squad.

In this squad (F) 6x 1700’s, 6x 1800’s and 1x 1900 draw everybody’s attention and put the men’s results list upside down. Chris Vandamme/BE shot a 1925, followed by Alfred Metz/DE 1877, Biull Goldwasser/BE 1866 and Jordi Rocca 1863.

Squad ‘G’ showed that the lane pattern holds perfectly well despite two (2) squads of 6 bowlers on a lane pair. This late night squad showed again some real topscores with the men as well with the ladies this time.

This squad ‘produced’ 7x 1700’s, 2x 1800’s and 1x 1988 series at the men’s division and with the ladies 3x 1600’s and 1x 1700 series!

Farida Pascoal-Blom used her re-entry but had to settle with just a few pins less than het previous squad, Angie Brown/GB put down 1684 pins but were topped by Barbara Karnasch/GE with 1719 pins.

In the men’s division Dan Ahlquist/SW shot another 1809, Alan Bennett settled for 1836 pins but all of them were over classed by Ron Oldfield/GB by 1988 (!) pins, enough for a provisional 1st place.

With two (2) squads to go on Saturday the cut is predicted to be for the ladies around 1600 and with the men 1750-pins.

Day 2

Squad C 13:00 hrs. will be the squad to remember with Christer Danielsson/Sw in the lead, Christer shot over his first three (3) games 815 (269-257-289) but did not lay down after his performance and carried on for a grand total of 1961 (245 avrg). His games were 268-224-189-262-203.Yvonne Berndt/Sw celebrated with a 1593. Other high scores for sq. C are John de Vries/NL 1834, Manfred Meier/De 1749, Torbjörn Halling/Sw 1742, Joost vd Lans/Nl 1737, Klaas Gorter/Nl 1717 and Lasse Jalava/Fi 1717.

But man of the day will stay in our memories as Christer Danielsson as the man from another planet!

D-squad promised some real fire works with the man Ulf Lönngren/SWE and Barry Horne/USA, they made their name of high scorers come true.

Steady Barry with no real high or low games ‘decided’ to work on a high game started with first ten strikes but a bad ball did not do his job resulting in a 288-game in the 6th game, his total over 8-games was 1906.

Slow starter Ulf Lönngren, first game 148(!), worked his way to 7th game and just like Barry got the first ten strikes but the 11th needed some help almost leaving the 4 – 9, number 12 strike was no doubt whatsoever.

Struggling a little bit in his last game but nevertheless resulted in a 8-game total of 1922(!) occupying 2nd place behind fellow countryman Christer Danielsson.

Meanwhile Liliane Vintens en Erna Buysse both from Belgium were battling for squad winner but also to be at top of the ladies division, however, both ladies had one or two bad games at the end and failed to go in front Farida Pascoal-Blom score of 1645 pins.

Liliane Vintens stayed ahead of Erna Buysse, 1624 to 1621 and occupied the 2nd and 3rd place respectively.

Day 1

The 5th anniversary of the Schiedam Senior Open welcomed over 200 participants from 12 different countries around Europe. This makes the 5th edition of the SSO the largest Senior Tournament within the ISBT organization but at the same time the largest Senior Tournament in Europe sofar.

Wednesday evening 19:00 hrs. was the kick off for the Early Birds and the first squad and immediately the bowlers showed their intentions to score high.

With the ladies Farida Pascoal-Blom leading the ladies division with 1646 it was a bit crowded in the men’s division with three bowlers battling for the day price sponsored by Sluijmer Consultancy.

Jan Weideman/NL and Guy Latry/Fr were only separated by three pins 1826 and 1823 but Christian Stefan/At struck out to take first place (1841).

Other high scores where 1738 Steve Wright/UK, Eric Kok/NL 1729, Ger van Loon/NL 1720 and Ronald Dol/NL 1716.
