2010 SCHIEDAM SENIOR OPEN, SCHIEDAM/NL

Day 1

The 5th anniversary of the Schiedam Senior Open welcomed over 200 participants from 12 different countries around Europe. This makes the 5th edition of the SSO the largest Senior Tournament within the ISBT organization but at the same time the largest Senior Tournament in Europe sofar.

Wednesday evening 19:00 hrs. was the kick off for the Early Birds and the first squad and immediately the bowlers showed their intentions to score high.

With the ladies Farida Pascoal-Blom leading the ladies division with 1646 it was a bit crowded in the men’s division with three bowlers battling for the day price sponsored by Sluijmer Consultancy.

Jan Weideman/NL and Guy Latry/Fr were only separated by three pins 1826 and 1823 but Christian Stefan/At struck out to take first place (1841).

Other high scores where 1738 Steve Wright/UK, Eric Kok/NL 1729, Ger van Loon/NL 1720 and Ronald Dol/NL 1716.

PRESS RELEASE

Latem, July 26 2010

Despite the extreme temperatures results were also extreme with 4x 300’s (André Geelen/Bel, Michel Perniaux/Bel, Leif Sjöberg/Swe and John Bosch/Net)

With Gino Vanderheagen as Tournament Director and his crew with ao. Liliane Vintens, Chris Vandamme and Frederick Lagrou the tournament was in good hands.

The 2nd Flanders Senior Open will be for sure conducted in 2011 in the same period of time.

The Master’s Final with the men was one of surprises and with a dramatic end.
The Master’s consists of Best of Three matches with Barry Horne/USA in 3rd position, 2nd Ron Oldfield/Eng and 1st André Geelen/Bel. Barry Horne needed all 3-games to shut out Ron Oldfield.
Than André Geelen had to play Barry Horne, the first game was won by Barry and the second game after strings of strikes from both Barry and André went all the way to the very last frame, Barry Horne already finished (254) André needed a strike to clinch the 2nd game by one (1) pin forcing a 3rd game for the Master’s but a 7-pin not cooperating resulted in a Champion by one pin.
Barry Horne not having a good feeling about the final Sunday, he missed an exit on his way to the bowl and his two first games were far from great. Nevertheless a true Champion of the 2010 Flanders Senior Open.

The Ladies division was like the men a good mix of countries, Christel Carlsson/Swe, Liliane Vintens/Bel and Angie Brown/Eng. Angie Brown coming in at second place had apparently no problems with Liliane Vintens. First seed Christel Carlsson did not have the carry as Angie Brown and lost her first match 214 to 234, 2nd match same thing Angie striking on crucial moments resulting in a well deserved win 212 to 244 and Champion of the 2010 Flanders Senior Open.
All participants and there supporters were convinced that separate Men and Women divisions is the answer to gain more participants but is a tool to promote the Senior Bowling Tour as such.
The International Senior Bowling Tour (ISBT) is promoting this and has in 2010 ten (10) tour stops in Europe (Germany/Belgium/Holland/England/Italy and France) running from March through November.
Next Tour Stop will be the Schiedam Senior Open, Schiedam/The Netherlands (2807-0108) and the Bowlmaster Senior Open, Brussels/Belgium (1108-1508). Please check the following web sites for more info:

Sint Latem-Martens, July 24th 2010

Since the start of the tournament Wednesday 21st the impression of the tournament was that it would be a high scoring one. Already on the very first day of the tournament André Geelen (Belgium) shot the first perfect in his 5th game of his first block of 6-games (1498). Followed by fellow country man Michel Perniaux and today Saturday July 24th Leif Sjöberg (Sweden) in his 3rd game of his re-entry.

With the ladies Liliane Vintens (Belgium) took the lead on Wednesday scoring 1258 (6) together with her 2nd block she settles for 1st place totaling 2625, followed by Lena Sulkanen (Sweden) 2601 for 2nd place and Christel Carlsson (Sweden) 2562 for a provisional 3rd place.

Meanwhile Chris Vandamme (Belgium) took 1st place with a 12-game total of 2922, but late arrival Olle Svensson (Sweden) took the lead from Chris Vandamme with 2928 pins. 3rd place was for Yves van Damme (Belgium) with a 12-game score of 2922.

More important, however, is that the Flanders Senior Open is conducted for the very first time and ‘scored’ a total of 119 entries, excluding re-entries!

Day 5 and Finals

The 3rd stop of the International Senior Bowling Tour (ISBT) showed again that the format with separated Women and Men divisions together with separated finals and price money is not only the vision of the ISBT Presidium but moreover very much appreciated by the ladies as they have their ‘own’ competition. Also the ranking is a separated competition between men and women.

Due to the ESBC Championships in Vienna, only one week ahead of the ALPA Senior Open apparently some well-known players could not make it to Buxtehude. Nevertheless the tournament welcomed a good mix of players from Germany, Norway, Sweden, Holland, Belgium, Ireland and Austria.

Despite the extreme heat at, especially, the Friday and Saturday squads these were the highest scoring sessions of the week with Dan Ahlquist (SWE) leading by two breathtaking 6-game series of 1537 and 1472 total 3009 pins an qualifying average of ample 250,75! As from Day 1 Farida Pascoal-Blom (NLD) took the lead and stayed there until the finals on Sunday.

The Sunday-finals were of very high quality whereas the winners in both divisions were decided in the last game and even in the last frame with the men. You could feel the intensity at both the top four (4) ladies and the top ten (10) men. Due to the advanced scoring processing system of the ISBT the players and the audience were kept informed on a game by game basis, this feature was very well appreciated by all bowlers, ladies and men and the audience.
The processing was carried out by Torbe Gaiser with Ad vd. Jagt in the background monitoring the processing. This way the audience could follow their favorite(s) easily which was much appreciated.

As it was very tensive with the men’s division the outcome was very surprising in the end. Winner of the men’s division Ron Oldfield (GBR) and runner-up Dan Ahlquist (SWE) were eventually separated by just three (3) pins!
At the ladies division leading lady Erna Buysse (BEL) after 3-games of final play lost track in the last and final game whereas Farida Pascoal-Blom (NLD) took her change and clinched first place with a strong finish in frames 9 and 10.
Iggi Zech (GER) took her change as well and finished on a well deserved 2nd place.
